Chemotherapy and the Loss of Eyelashes
Chemotherapy and the Loss of Eyelashes
While many women undergoing chemotherapy anticipate and even prepare for losing the hair on their, many often are not fully prepared for the loss of their eyelashes as well. Though there are wigs and other head coverings available for women who have lost their hair, there are few such options for those who have lost their eyelashes. One very important thing to bear in mind: your eyelashes, just like hair, will grow back, and your overall health is by far the most important thing. However, there are a number of tips that encourage eyelash growth, and strengthen eyelashes as they grow back in that many women who are going through chemotherapy might find helpful to try.
Makeup Tips
Many women also like to use makeup after undergoing chemotherapy, and some find it therapeutic after going through the process. Many of these women use makeup to define their eyes after losing their eyelashes and waiting for their eyelashes to grow back after chemotherapy. Very natural looking false eyelashes can present the appearance of real eyelashes when applied as close to where your natural lashline would be as possible. In fact, some false eyelashes that are made from natural hairs like mink are nearly indistinguishable from real eyelashes, making them a great option for women who want the most natural look. Different styles of eyeliner can also define the eye, giving the effect that eyelashes provide. Sleek styles from liquid eyeliner and smudged and smoky styles from a pencil or gel eyeliner both work very well for this technique. Some women may like to try different shades of eyeliner for a pop of color!
Natural Tips
There are also some treatments available to help speed up the growth of lashes. Try using castor oil, or other vitamin-infused oils applied along your lashline (available for purchase at health food stores, as well as some grocery stores). There are even several prescription drugs that can assist in growing stronger and longer eyelashes. Your doctor will be able to recommend and prescribe these to you, if you are a good candidate. Maintaining your overall health is also important in speeding up the regrowth of your eyelashes. Some might find vitamin supplements to be helpful.
Health Tips
Maintaining the overall health and longevity of your eyelashes as they grow in will keep them stronger. Always remember to be gentle with your eyes and eyelashes. Avoid rubbing them harshly, scrubbing them, tugging on them, or using any harsh soaps or makeup removers in the eye area, which can tear out weak eyelash follicles. Eat well and healthy, and follow your doctor’s care instructions for staying well. If you have additional concerns about the growth or appearance of your eyelashes after undergoing chemotherapy, speak to your doctor, who may be able to offer additional advice and consideration. Above all, try to stay confident! Good health is far more important that any beauty tip.
