Castor Oil: Magic or Myth?

Nobody knows better than us how tough it can be to get perfectly gorgeous lashes. You know the kind we’re talking about: Lashes that are naturally thick, long, full, and voluminous! But all too often, your makeup routine can take a toll on your lashes. Many beauty fans have started to turn to castor oil to help condition and care for their eyelashes. But does castor oil on your eyelashes really work?

What is castor oil?

Castor oil is derived from a certain type of beans, and has been known for many, many years for its health benefits. Many professionals believe that it can promote strength and growth in hair follicles like the hair on your head or your eyebrows. This includes your eyelashes! If you have difficulties with your eyelashes falling out, or looking sparse or short, you might like to try applying castor oil to your eyelashes to see if it has any results.

How to use it

You can purchase castor oil at health food stores. Always wash and dry your face, and remove all traces of eye makeup or false eyelashes before getting started. To apply the castor oil, you can use a clean eyeliner brush, or even disposable mascara wands that are available for purchase at beauty supply stores. Dip your brush in the oil, wipe off any access using a paper towel or the edge of the bottle, and then gently brush onto your clean eyelashes. To allow the oil to work effectively, you might prefer to apply the oil at night. You should definitely wait for the oil to dry before applying any makeup, as it will cause the makeup to smudge.

Another great aspect of using castor oil on your eyelashes is that it is a natural substance. Other products that claim to condition and grow your eyelashes can be harmful to the eyes. If you’re nervous about using chemicals that claim to condition and grow your eyelashes so near to your eyes and face, then castor oil might be a great option. But, like always when using products near your eyes and face, be careful not to get any oil in your eyes, as that may be irritating, and watch for any signs of irritation. If you notice any redness, swelling, or burning near your eye, stop using castor oil immediately.

Results

Some people say they can see results immediately from using castor oil on their eyelashes to promote strength and growth. Other people claim it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks to notice a difference in their eyelashes. You might notice that your lashes seem longer, fuller, even a darker color than usual. You might also notice that they’re falling out less and less, and hold up stronger against tough makeup remover!
