Winter Holiday Hairdo: our TOP 3 Suggestions
It’s not uncommon to hear people talking about how winter is the “lazy” season for girls since most of winter fashion revolves around leggings, jeans and in general – covered clothing. As such, people often think that girls have it much easier during Winter, with not needing to think about hair growth at certain places (You know what I mean), that ever-so desired summer body, and also their hair since we can simply bun it up and hide it under our coats or winter hats. However, with every change in season, there are always new styles and trends created and to be kept up with. Winter is all about keeping cozy and comfortable, and it’ll be difficult to see why you shouldn’t wear a fresh cut to embrace the cold, snowy season. After rummaging through tons of hair-dos featured on fashion sites such as Elle and Glamour Magazine, we’ve finally managed to narrow it down to three 5 minute hair-dos you have to try out this winter holiday.
#1 medium & long hair – loose curls
To bring in that snug and cozy look, if you have medium or long hair, opt for loose curls. No matter the season, wearing your hair in soft and loose curls will always be perfect with every outfit and makeup look. These curls are famous for being worn by Victoria Secrets models and trust me, you can attain the same gorgeous look to wear for winter, either by themselves or with a beanie in just under 5 minutes albeit with some practice and perseverance.
What you’ll need:
- Heat Protection Spray
- Hair Spray (If your hair just needs a little more control)
- Curling iron (Recommended: 1” – 1.5” ceramic curling iron)
How to get this winter holiday hairdo:
Begin by spraying a layer of heat protection spray all over your hair to prevent any damage to your hair from this curling experience, especially if your hair is already damaged from being previously exposed to chemicals (i.e. hair dyes) or is just not really in the best shape.
Following this, divide your hair into two sections by separating the hair at the top of your head and the bottom of your head. Curling your hair in sections will make for tidier and more organized curling, ensuring that you leave no tresses untouched.
Using your curling iron, take in a piece of hair into your curling iron in the direction facing you starting from the bottom of your hair, and then roll the curling iron up towards the top of your head. Hold the iron there for between 3 to 5 seconds depending on the thickness of your hair. Do be careful to not bring the curling iron too high up lest you desire less natural looking curls or injury to your scalp. Work your way around the bottom section of hair. After finishing that section, gently clip or move the already curled hair aside and proceed with curling the hair in the top section in that same way.
For those with bangs, side-swept bangs or fringes, this gets a little trickier. It’s important that you should curl your fringe away from your face as this will help to frame your face and give you the illusion of a slimmer and contoured face.
For looser curls, do opt for using a curling iron that is about 1” to 1.5” in diameter as the larger barrel will help you get those beautiful loose effortless curls that you desire.
If you’re still unsure about how attain these curls, do check out beauty guru Jen Chae’s easy loose curls tutorial (YouTube: Frmheadtotoe).
These loose curls will definitely fit right into the cozy and lazy feel of winter, and by layering a beanie over these curls, this adds a cute touch to your overall look! Choose a beanie that matches your hair color, carefully wear this on top of your curls and head right out of the door to show off your fresh new look for this winter!
#2 straight hair as your winter holiday hairdo
One of the other top picks for your winter holiday hairdo exudes minimalism – keeping your tresses straight and neat. There are so many reasons why some girls prefer to have straight hair. Straight hair doesn’t require much work or effort compared to some other hairstyles and this is perfect for winter, considering that we all love to snuggle under the sheets and enjoy the warmth and comforts of our beds during this season! Some girls are blessed with naturally straight hair, but for those who struggle with frizzy hair or hair that just isn’t as straight as you would like it to be, here is how you can go about transforming your once uncontrollable hair into straight, sleek hair in just under 5 minutes.
What you’ll need:
- Heat Protection Spray
- Hair Spray
- Flat iron
How to get started
:
Following Celebrity Stylist Jacqueline Bush’s tutorial on how to straighten your hair with a flat iron, always begin with spraying a layer of heat protection spray all over the hair to be curled for the same reasons as set out in the above hairstyle.
Using your flat iron, take in a piece of hair proportional to the size of your iron. Make sure that you’ve already combed your hair before this for a more efficient straightening process. For more volume, give your hair roots a quick blow-dry before you begin straightening it. Go through all your hair and there, you’ve got yourself nice, beautiful straight hair!
Once again, the versatility of this hairstyle cannot be ignored. You can either choose to wear your hair as it is for that classy and glamorous look, or you can opt for giving your look some extra color by wearing your hair under a beanie that matches the shade of your hair. So go ahead and try out this hairstyle, I assure you that it’s going to be a winner this winter!
#3 the side french braids
Braids aren’t just for summer, they’re an easy and quick way of styling your hair whilst giving your hair a momentary rest from any chemical products i.e. heat protection sprays, that you may use when straightening or curling your hair.
With the approach of winter, braids can be weaved into a variety of hairstyles, but if you want to look like Elsa or Katniss in the Hunger Games franchise, why don’t you consider trying a side French braid! This look isn’t as difficult as it looks and can be achieved in just a few steps.
What you need:
- Hairbrush
- Hair Ties
How to get started
:
As the name goes, this look is simply a braid down the side of your head. Start by taking a small section of hair on the right side or left side of your head (according to your own preference for where the braid ends) and begin to create a French braid.
To create a French braid, section the hair into three equal amounts. Taking the outermost right strand, cross it over the middle and tighten the hair gently. Following this, take the strand on the outermost left and cross it over the middle strand. Following the foundation braid created, continue to add more hair with each new crossover and keep the French braid along the side of the head you started with until you reach the neckline.
Upon reaching the neckline, you should have obtained a French braid as shown in the above picture. Begin to French braid horizontally towards the opposite side you started your French braid from. When there is no more hair left along the neckline to incorporate into your braid and all the hair is now in the braid, continue to create a traditional braid until your desired length. Once completed, secure this braid with an elastic band or hair tie and you’re good to go!
If you desire a looser side French braid, don’t be afraid to pull on the sides of your braid gently to create more volume and a larger braid. Do also avoid forming too tight a French braid as the look will then cease to carry an effortless appearance and instead give the impression of being uptight and stern.
Once again this hairstyle is quick and easy to achieve, and you can wear it out as it is or paired with a beanie or cute winter hat! This look is great for keeping those loose hairs out of your face and for giving you just that extra spice to your winter look. It’s elegant, glamorous and can be worn out on any occasion.
Conclusion
The Winter is calling for you to be adventurous, for you to be excited about giving yourself a new look to welcome in the season’s festivities and cheer. These three looks are simple, easy and can be put together in no time at all. Remember not to be afraid of change for change is what helps us progress. You’ll never know how much you’ll like the look if you don’t muster up the courage to try it out. Give yourself a little treat this winter and usher in this season with the new you.
